Yes, there was a 1977 Broomgate

Curling Legends: Ken Horton Part 2

After a rollicking Part 1 segment, Curling Legends Podcast host Kevin Palmer continues his extensive conversation with Scotland’s Ken Horton.

Episode 96 begins after the 1977 world men’s championship, progressing to the 1983 worlds and the controversy surrounding Swedish corn brooms.

(Yes, there have been multiple “Broomgates” over the decades.)

Ken shares an assortment of stories that include a Paul Gowsell tale, the use of tinfoil at the 1989 worlds and a trouser mishap that forced an umpire—Scottish legend Chuck Hay—to rule on the use of denim at a world championship.

We wrap the two-part podcast series with an explanation of the Scottish Curling Trust, and its efforts to promote participation and preserve the history of curling.
